Dr. Ali Moshirfar


Dr. Moshirfar is the director of the Spine Surgery division of the Center for Advanced Orthopedics and Pain Management. Dr. Moshirfar is a board certified orthopaedic surgeon with extensive specialized fellowship training in spine surgery. His early interests were in engineering, and he was granted a full scholarship to the University of Maryland, College Park campus. His interest in medicine, and particularly in orthopaedic and spinal injuries, was sparked by his volunteer activities in the Department of Fire and Rescue in Montgomery County, Maryland, as a certified Emergency Medical Technician and a fire fighter.

To pursue his interests in medicine, he obtained his Bachelor of Science degree in Physiology and Neurobiology at the University of Maryland and graduated with honors. He then attended the prestigious University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine in Philadelphia. After medical school, he completed a general surgery internship and a residency in orthopaedic surgery at the Johns Hopkins University Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland. While a resident, he received the AVENTIS Orthopaedic Resident Scholarship, performed numerous research projects, presented research findings at national meetings, and secured a grant from the renowned Orthopaedic Research and Education Foundation and the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery.

After completing his residency training at Johns Hopkins, Dr. Moshirfar pursued fellowship specialty training in spine surgery at the esteemed New England Baptist Hospital, which is part of the Harvard University Care Group, in Boston, Massachusetts. There he obtained extensive training in the newest cutting-edge techniques for the treatment of spinal column disorders in adults and adolescents as well as minimally invasive spinal surgery.

On his return to the area, Dr. Moshirfar became an Assistant Professor in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at Johns Hopkins University, where he continues to work part-time. He has more than 30 original peer-reviewed journal articles and abstracts (including publications in the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery, Clinical Orthopaedics and Related Research, and Spine) and has co-authored many book chapters.
He continues to lecture on numerous topics relating to spine surgery both locally and nationally. His particular areas of interest include adult spinal deformity and spinopelvic fixation. He is presently working with manufacturing firms in the industry to develop specialize pelvic screws for difficult fusions of the spine to the pelvis. He continues to pursue his interests in clinical and biomechanical research and publishes regularly.
